Jack is 5

I blinked. And now he’s five.

 

Jack’s birthday was Thursday. And he would probably be upset that he was wearing a Jayhawk hat in that baby picture. At least for now, Nathan is successfully turning him into a little Tiger.

After his special birthday breakfast, he headed off to school. He was so excited because he got to take a lunchable and chocolate milk for lunch. As soon as he walked in his classroom he told his teacher about it. He took chocolate cupcakes with green (his current favorite color) icing for his birthday treat. He chose spaghetti and chocolate cake for his birthday dinner.

After cake he opened his presents from Mommy and Daddy. We got him a box of Star Wars books that are just the right level for him to read by himself. He also got his first Cardinals baseball hat and a new scripture lullabies CD (to listen to while he goes to sleep). He is very attached to his sleeping CDs and I love knowing that the last thing he hears at night is scripture. Last year I started giving him a Bible verse for his birthday. This year I picked Isaiah 40:30-31.

Even youths grow tired and weary,
and young men stumble and fall;

 but those who hope in the Lord
will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.

 

Here are some of his favorite things, along with some things I don’t want to forget about this age:

- His loves his friends at school and loves inviting them to our house to play. He likes it even more when he gets to go to their house for a playdate.

- Favorite foods include red peppers, spaghetti, macaroni and cheese, chips and salsa, sharp cheddar cheese, all fruit and anything sweet.

- He loves listening to CDs. He has his own CD player in his room and we gave him a bunch of our old CDs. His favorites are The Beetles and Garth Brooks.

- He is learning to read by himself. Right after Christmas he figured out to sound words out and he’s getting better everyday.

- He really likes to sing. Music class at school is his favorite and he is also in children’s choir at church.

- He loves being outside. His camping trips and fishing outings with Daddy are among his very favorite things.

- He still freaks out in the bathtub when we’re rinsing the shampoo out of his hair and water gets on his eyes.

- He sleeps with Charlie every night.

- He talks constantly.

- He is a great big brother. They, of course, have their rough moments. But he loves Henry and they do a great job playing together.

- He doesn’t take naps anymore, but he still rests in his room for 2 hours everyday. Most of the time he reads books or play legos.

- He loves it when Daddy tells him stories at bedtime. Tonight’s story was about Billy Mouse, the mouse that lives in Jack’s closet. They also recently finished an ongoing Star Wars story.

- He really, really thinks it’s hilarious to say bathroom words. Despite the fact that he’s not allowed to say bathroom words, oftentimes he just can’t help himself. In fact, the only way I got him to smile in the picture with his cake was by rattling off a few bathroom words and he immediately cracked up.
